PTE Academic Exam Structure
1. Speaking & Writing
This is the longest section of the exam, taking approximately 54 to 67 minutes. It is a heavily integrated module, primarily assessing your Speaking and Writing skills, but also drawing on Reading and Listening. Key tasks within this section include “Read Aloud,” where you must read text on screen clearly; “Repeat Sentence,” testing listening and speaking accuracy; and the main writing task, a short essay.
2. Reading
The Reading section lasts between 29 and 30 minutes. It focuses on assessing your Reading skill, along with some integration of Writing. This section features tasks designed to test comprehension and vocabulary, such as multiple-choice questions, re-ordering paragraphs to restore coherence to a passage, and various formats of filling in the blanks.
3. Listening
The final section is the Listening module, which takes 30 to 43 minutes. It is also highly integrated, testing your Listening, Reading, and Writing abilities. Tasks here require you to process spoken information and produce written output, including tasks like summarizing spoken text, answering multiple-choice questions based on audio, and “Writing from Dictation,” where you accurately transcribe a sentence you hear.
Scoring and Acceptance
PTE Academic uses a single, granular score ranging from 10 to 90 on the Global Scale of English (GSE).
Integrated Skills: Your performance in one section often affects the score of another. For example, your speaking skill is used to assess your score on the “Read Aloud” task.
University Requirements: Most international universities require an overall score between 50 and 70 (equivalent to IELTS 6.0–7.5), though specific program requirements may vary.
Your PTE score can be sent to an unlimited number of institutions and governments worldwide at no additional cost.
